With the Mobile World Congress just round the corner we see yet another big mobile phone manufacturer unveil its flagship mobile phone for this year: this time it’s Samsung. Samsung have gone for an update of one of their big hitters from last year, the Samsung F480 Tocco. The update will be called the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition (aka the S8300).
The original Samsung Tocco was released in May 2008 and became the best selling mobile phone in the UK mobile market. (Thanks to amazing Samsung Tocco contracts with free gifts available no doubt). With such huge sale volumes with the Tocco predecessor, why not keep with a good thing? Samsung are hoping that the release of the Tocco Ultra Edition will push their mobile division to top spot again this year.
Right, down to business: what are we expecting from the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition?
- The Basics: The Tocco Ultra is 110 x 51.5 x 12.7mm (compared with 98.4 x 55 x 11.6 mm of its predecessor) and bolsters an impressive 2.8 inch WQVGA resolution touch screen with Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) and Harpic touch technology. Not only has the Tocco upgrade contains a touch screen but also a slide 3 x 4 keypad, the first of its kind to do so; making dialling and texting much easier.
- Connectivity: 7.2 Mbit HSDPA, Bluetooth
- Camera: 8 mega pixel with geo-tagging, auto focus, LED flash, face detection, 30FPS VGA recording
- Other: FM tuner, SDcard slot, upgraded TouchWiz user interface from the original Tocco.
All in all, this phone looks really, really first-class. The only bits that let it down in this day and age are that it does not have Wi-Fi support and only 75MB of internal memory, which will not go very far at all. If you can put up with not having these elements then the Samsung Ultra Edition may be with a punt. Tocco Ultra Edition reviews and videos to follow Mobile World Congress.
Available from May 2008.
