Phones running the Google Android operating system are proving to be quite popular among phone users. The first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1 (aka the HTC Dream) was released towards the end of 2008 and proved to be very popular. Now HTC have announced that their follow-up Android phone, the HTC Magic has just topped the one million sales mark. This puts the HTC Magic ahead of its main rival the Palm Pre in terms of popularity, but still far short of the seemingly unstoppable iPhone phenomenon.
The news comes amid an upturn in global smartphone sales, with a 27% increase in total smartphone sales compared to this time last year. It seems that smartphones are one product that is not being badly hit by the global economic downturn. Mobile phone sales overall, however, have seen a slight downturn during the same period.
The success of the HTC Magic is another indicator of the success and popularity of the new Google operating system. Many mobile phone manufacturers are now hoping to cash in on the Android hysteria by releasing their own Google-powered handsets. Upcoming Android devices include the T-Mobile G2 Touch and Sony Ericsson, LG and Motorola also have Android phones in development. HTC themselves now hope to improve upon their success with their newer, sexier Android device, the HTC Hero. The Hero is already one of the most desired phones around, Android-powered or not.
The HTC Magic features a 3.2” TFT-LCD touch sensitive screen that makes use of capacitive technology. The Magic has gone on to sell over a million units despite lacking the physical keypad that was found on the earlier Android phone the T-Mobile G1 that was supposedly the one of the latter phones key selling points.
