Nokia are pushing further into the touchscreen market with the announcement of their new Nokia 5230, an entry-level touchscreen handset. The 5230 has the same dimensions as the 5800 XpressMusic but only comes with a 2 megapixel camera and does away with Wi-Fi. Although the pixel count on the camera is not the highest it is capable of decent video recording with support for VGA at 30fps.
Despite the lack of Wi-Fi the 5230 still has some great features on board. The 3.2″ resistive touchscreen comes with a nicely detailed resolution of 640 x 360 which beautifully shows off the S60 interface. There will also be benefit to social networkers with integration for services like Facebook, YouTube and MySpace. There will also be support for Ovi Maps with the 5230′s built-in GPS. You can surf the net with the in-built web browser or check your emails with the email client, and there is also support for Microsoft Exchange.
While having the appearance and many of the features of phones like the 5800 XpressMusic Nokia have decided to not brand the 5230 with the XpressMusic label. Even so the 5230 looks to be a great music phone, with 3.5mm audio jack and FM radio on top of its other music features. Nokia claim that the 5230′s 1320 mAh battery will provide it with 33 hours of non-stop music playback. The 5230 will have expandable memory of 16GB but no news of its onboard memory just yet.
The 5230 will come with two available colours for its front cover and six for the back, and if you can do without Wi-Fi it’s a great choice for a low-cost first time touchscreen. Despite the lack of Wi-Fi there are still some great features present and it is a wonder why Nokia did not include it in its XpressMusic line. The 5320 should be available during Q4 of 2009.
