Nokia releases an entry-level touchscreen handset in the Nokia 5230. Running on the 5th edition of its versatile Symbian S60 platform, the new handset sports a new user interface with content and menu bars for quick access to any apps or files right form the homescreen.
There’s handwriting recognition software as well as a full QWERTY keyboard onscreen when entering text. It has the usual accelerometer, ambient light and proximity sensors that come standard in most touchscreen handset. It has A-GPS and a competent document viewer for popular office files. The new Nokia handset is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of the year in a variety of interchangeable back covers in yellow, pink, red, blue, silver or dark silver.
A Multimedia Focus
Where the Nokia 5230 stands out are its entertainment features that starts with a stunning 3.2” near HD touchscreen that sports a 16:9 aspect ratio and 16 millions colors to make it one of the most brilliant displays in the market. It has Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP for using wireless stereo headphones and a web browser that supports Flash video. Alternatively, it’s ported with a 3.5mm audio out hack so you can use hi-fi headphones.
Apart from a powerful battery that gives 33 hours of continuous music listening between charges, the Nokia 5230 allows access to the Nokia Ovi Store and includes online support for Comes With Music subscription option that allows you to download all the music files you want.
Some Prudent Cut Backs
Admittedly, Nokia has to tone down on a couple of features to bring the Nokia 5230 to a level of affordability without compromising on the features that it already has. There’s no WiFi/WLAN wireless connectivity. The perfunctory nod to an imaging phone is reduced to 2 megapixels without autofocus and flash. But it more than makes up for that with a film-quality 30 fps VGA recording and a media player that supports the popular audio and video file formats.
