Nokia Reincarnates its Nokia 5800 with the 5800 Navigation Edition

September 23rd, 2009 by Simon

Nokia 5800 Navigation EditionFinnish mobile phone giant Nokia has unveiled the re-tuned version of its 5800 Xpress Music touchscreen smartphone with the Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition. What makes it stand out among handsets with the GPS feature is that it comes preloaded with a lifetime license for its voice-driven navigational guidance system as well as the latest Ovi Maps that enable pinpoint accuracy of where you want to go and other useful information at your fingertips such as weather reports and local traffic warnings.

The trade-off?  You don’t get the pre-loaded “Comes With Music” apps and that’s why the Xpress Music branding has been taken off.  But you still get its rich media player supporting all the popular audio and video codecs.

The Same 5800 Inside

This is the same 5800 Xpress Music touchscreen smartphone, the first of its kind from Nokia and in case you’ve missed out on its features, here they are:

  • It’s a quad band GSM with 3G/HSDPA/HSUPA for no-wait browsing, messaging and downloading over the internet and runs on the latest Symbian OS S60 release 5.0.
  • It sports a gorgeous 3.2“ QVGA TFT resistive touchscreen display supporting 16 million colors and a proximity sensor that turns off the touchscreen when putting the handset against your face in a call.  There’s also the usual accelerometer for automatic portrait and landscape viewing with the corresponding tile of the handset.
  • It has stereo FM radio with RDS receiver, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR with A2DP support for using wireless stereo earphones and  Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g for wireless local data connectivity at 54 Mbps.
  • It’s got a 3.15 megapixel autofocus camera with the usual Carl Zeiss optics.  VGA recording is at film quality of 30 frames per second.  There’s a secondary VGA camera for 3G video calls.
  • It has a shared 128 MB of internal memory upgradeable to 16GB with its microSD expansion slot.

Availability

Estimated to go on sale in Europe a price point of €285 towards the last quarter of 2009, the new reinvigorated Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition should attract the more tech savvy crowd interested in GPS assisted handsets.  It even comes with a car charger and a mounting kit for your car.
