Is that a Samsung? A Nokia? No, It’s the new LG GW550

LG GW550Well, you can’t be faulted if at first look, you might suspect it to be a Samsung or a Nokia.  It does look like the Samsung Blackjack or a Nokia E71/E72.  But that only proves the candybar QWERTY form factor popularized by the Blackberry smartphone is just about everywhere.  And Korean mobile phone giant LG Electronics won’t lag behind the trend.  It now has its newest smartphone with the QWERTY LG GW550 joining the crowd and packing its own set of features to leave the competition up on its toes.

No-frills Feature Set

This is really not LG’s first dip into the QWERTY markets. But the LG GW550 looks like it’s it first foray into the QWERTY smartphone markets and we can clearly see its ambitions to eat into the business and corporate users of the BlackBerrys.  Looking into its feature set makes this even more apparent.  It’s basically your PDA, internet and messaging phone with some imaging and entertainment features on the side.

  • The LG GM550 is quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band UMTS with 3G/HSDPA/HSUPA that allows high speed surfing and downloading over the internet.
  • You get a 2.4“ QVGA TFT LCD screen with 65k color depth support,  It sports a 3.2 megapixel fixed focus camera and a VGA secondary camera at the front for video calls in 3G.
  • Its got Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR and USB 2.0
  • Memory is expandable from a microSD memory expansion slot.

One can easily see it’s no stand-out in the features department.  It doesn’t have Wi-Fi, A2DP support for wireless stereo headphones and its imaging camera is just so-so.  All these are obviously meant to bring the phone to a larger market wanting only the essential features for a business phone without much of the trendy frills that can price it beyond the reach of many.  Cheers to a basic no-frill business smartphone.
