With Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X2 about to arrive any time now, HTC has taken the lead by releasing the HD2. Despite the Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional OS, the HD2 will be using a capacitive high definition touch screen. Now, I seriously believe that Snapdragon mobile phones are devices to be reckoned with, but when you waste that much processing power on a bad OS, it makes me want to think twice. Still, I expect a lot of great things from HTC, considering that their proprietary touch interface is really impressive and they have a knack for creating really great mobile phones.
HTC HD2 is officially out and it has a pretty hefty price tag. Paying 550 Euro for a Windows Mobile phone makes me squirm in my seat. Give me Zune HD any day instead. I would very much like to see how WinMo OS can manage to make the 1 GHz Snapdragon slow down due to the bad memory allocation –or so I’ve been told. The bottom line is that unless you can actually change the OS for this mobile phone, this might not be such a good investment. Of course, if they can confirm that the 6.5 OS can be upgraded to WinMo version 7, then there might still be hope for this phone yet.
Impressively, this HTC device is seeing a simultaneous release for both the UK and Asia; with the US version still slated for early 2010 –I smell a carrier deal. As a WinMo device, this phone is going up against the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2. I am not giving any predictions on how that will turn out yet, but the HTC is showing pretty good standing with its WinMo customized version of the original HTC Sense interface. On the other hand, X2’s low end resistive touch screen offers better integration with the Windows interface and perhaps a much reasonable price tag.
