There are rumors in the industry that Nokia has shown interest in purchasing Palm.
This is the second time that these companies have been linked with each another. In the previous year (September to be precise), Palm and Nokia were involved in takeover reports. However, the current rumors are stronger than ever. This is the reason why the stock prices of Palm have surged a considerable 8 percent, as per the last figures collected.
The interesting fact about the rumors involving the two companies is that both have a considerable difference towards the way they approach the market. Nokia, a Symbian-based organization, has recently got itself involved in a long-term development of the Maemo OS. In fact, the new OS is soon to make its presence felt on the mobile market with the upcoming Nokia N900. However, Palm is totally dedicated to WebOS.
As per the experts, Nokia has been finding it quite hard to consolidate their position in the market of smart phones, especially with Android OS and iPhone having a stranglehold here. This is one of the reasons why we can believe that the move towards buying Palm is a real possibility. This move may have been taken by Nokia for enhancing their position in the smartphone market where Palm has always enjoyed considerable success.
However, with the market cap of $1.7 billion, Palm is incredibly expensive. It is tough for one to believe how a reputed organization, like Nokia, can make such a massive investment on a company, which is no less than a sinking ship at this moment. It is only time that will tell us how Nokia uses Palm to climb up the ladder of the smartphone market.
