Samsung i5700 Galaxy Spica gets DivX

November 17th, 2009 by Best Mobile Contracts

Samsung Galaxy Lite i5700The Samsung i5700 Galaxy Spica (the mobile phone formerly known as Galaxy Lite), is bringing a DivX media playback compatibility to the Android operating system. This will be the first time an Android mobile phone will have DivX playback capabilities. DivX is currently one of the best ways to encode videos as has a very good ratio of small file size and high quality video. Sadly for many Android phone users, the OS does not support the playback of this file format. With DivX, you can squeeze in more files into a single microSD card saving a lot of time and effort transferring files. At the moment, the only way to play DivX files on Android phones is through downloaded applications such as “yxflash player”

The Spica was originally known as the Galaxy Lite and was recently confirmed to be an Android 1.5 device. The initial screen shots of the Lite showed a white phone with a bright green backing, the loud colored (but fun looking) theme did not make it to production but instead, the final product produced a more serious looking black phone (with happily printed logos of the Android OS –images of the final Spica still vary).

The Galaxy Spica follows the specifications of the original i7500 Galaxy closely. With the change mostly being the screen (goodbye AMOLED touch screen!), the 3 mega pixel camera and a smaller internal storage. The rest of the specifications however, remain the same. This has kept the Spica with an impressive 800 MHz processor, and all the other smart phone basics (GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, etc).

As of this moment, the Samsung i5700 Galaxy Spica is available via retail though carriers have yet to announce available plans. In Ireland however, O2 holds exclusivity for this device (no confirmation for how long, but it is most likely a timed exclusive –as always).
