The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition was originally launched quite a while back in the UK. The device featured full navigational turn-by-turn support for driving and walking, it also has a lifetime guidance deal with Nokia. This is why the 5800 made for an excellent alternative to GPS devices. The only thing it really lacked was customizable maps to make it go on par with an average Tom Tom GPS gadget.
Anyway, this little phone will be sitting on the dashboard of American automobiles pretty soon as Nokia has brought the device to the US. The phone will be priced at a cheap 200 Euro price tag (about 300 US dollars). Originally, the 5800 navigation edition was released in the UK for 300 Euro (the big price difference has to do with the promotional sale of the Nokia Online store). The 5800 is not the only device to make it to the US; the Nokia E72 has also been brought stateside.
There are varying reports regarding the exact specifics of the Nokia 5800’s exact specifications. The source reports that the screen of the device is only a 2.2 inch QVGA display, but Nokia Europe’s official page for the 5800 navigation edition indicates that the device has a 3.2 inch touch screen display. It also has a 5 mega pixel camera, LED flash, auto focus and TV quality video recording.
Anyway, the phone is impressive not only for the lifetime guidance capability, but also for its GPS features. As stated above, the phone delivers turn-by-turn voice navigation to keep users well on track. The audio quality of the voice prompts are clear and easy to understand, making directions simple to follow. Aside from GPS, the phone is also able to connect to various networks such as GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA and WiFi in order to update maps and other relevant GPS info.
