In what may seem to be a case of a very impressive security application, this tale is more about a thief’s lack of familiarity with technology than anything else. Still, good endings are good endings, making this little story worth telling.
In Oregon, United States; a man reported that his house was broken into. Theft was the apparent cause for the incursion and among the missing valuables was his jacket, his laptop and his Motorola DROID handset. The stolen items seem to be carefully chosen; as each can be easily sold to other buyers without questions. Electronic devices tend to fetch decent prices since they are a hot commodity.
One little mistake that the thief made was to actually take his own images using the stolen mobile phone. The original owner of the DROID has installed the Android Lookout application on the device. While the Lookout software does enable user to find their stolen phones on the map, it also uploads recently taken images and media for backup purposes.
When the victim of the theft logged into the account, he saw images that he had not originally taken. The image was then given to the police who then distributed it to a local school in order to help identify the suspect. With a clear picture of the subject, the police was able to identify the thief.
Flexilis, developers of the Lookout application should be proud. Their application has successfully helped catch a mobile phone thief. Lookout also helps secure device from hackers, backs up data and as mentioned, allows for the remote tracking of missing devices. The best part about the remote tracking feature is that it enables users to easily wipe the data from their phone and if possible, make the device sound an alarm to alert authorities nearby that the device is stolen.
