LG GW990 Not Quite a Mini Laptop, Too Much for a Phone

January 12th, 2010 by Best Mobile Contracts

LG GW990If there were standards to the kind of hardware that is to be put into a mobile phone, LG is definitely breaking a lot of rules. But thanks to the fact that there is no such rule, we can all enjoy the power of an Atom CPU on the LG GW990.

The device made a quick appearance at the CES held last week in Las Vegas and came on the stage in all of its glory. Most noticeable is the huge screen, sized at 4.8 inches –with a resolution of 1020 x 480 pixels. It is no wonder that the device hovers close to being a mini laptop, the screen on a Sony VAIO P is just slightly larger than this. Even more impressive is the 45nm Atom-core Pineview CPU. No word yet on the actual speed of this device, though it might even deliver a performance that would easily match or even better than that of the recently announced dual-core Snapdragon processor.

LG has been firm about calling the device a smart phone, meaning that communication functions is still the main feature of the device. It also lacks a keyboard making it a cross between a mobile device and a tablet.

The phone will also come with a 5 mega pixel camera, GPS, and HD-video capabilities. It will be using the Linux-based operating system which looks similar to the S-class UI that LG fans are used to.

The most impressive feature of the GW990 is the fact that it runs on an 1850 mAh battery. Despite the energy requirements of the Atom processor, the phone is able to conserve the power –it is said that this new processor uses just a tenth of the original energy needs of older Atom models.

Despite the hardware advantage, the GW990 borders on being too bulky to be a useful mobile phone. This is not the device you would want to pull out when you’re on the tube so it might be better to settle on a cheap decent phone and small net book instead.
