When Sony Ericsson announced that the XPERIA X2 will not be making it to its intended 2009 launch date, everyone already knew that the 2010 release date would be too close to the X10. Now, with only a week or so before X10 gets a public appearance, the X2 arrives with a 500 Euro price tag and specs that are pretty much so-last-year
The problem, as HTC HD2 has shown, is not with the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system. Though some may argue that the very root is the WinMo interface, it has been shown that with a little ingenuity, there are workarounds to delivering a great user experience.
Anyway, the X2’s specs are still impressive until today with its 8 mega pixel camera which can shoot 3264 x 2447 images, support geo-tagging and shoot WVGA videos at 30 frames per second. The 3.2 inch resistive touch screen has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and can display up to 65 thousand colors. The phone has a full QWERTY keyboard, an optical track pad (which somehow compensates for the lack of a capacitive touch screen) and an accelerometer sensor. The device will have a 110 MB internal storage and will support 16GB micro SD cards. This phone will run on a Qualcomm MSM 7200 528 MHz CPU.
Despite the heavy hardware, the X2 still falls short of the high standards set by the HD2. In fact, until HTC’s other WinMo phones come out (like the HTC Trophy and HTC Photon); the HD2 will hold the title of the best WinMo device for the time being.
For those who find the X2’s price a little too steep, the X1 is still available. While the X2 delivers better hardware than the X1, some feel that it would be better to simply get an XPERIA X1 and update the OS to 6.5 through somewhat less-than-official means.
