BlackBerry to Get Twitter: Still in Early Stages

February 15th, 2010 by Best Mobile Contracts

BlackBerry TwitterWell, not that early. Apparently, Canadian mobile phone manufacturer Research in Motion is starting the feel a little left behind (just a little?) and has decided to include Twitter functionality to the BlackBerry OS. This new application is still far from a commercially available version, but some lucky folks got to test run the app.

Now, before we jump into the new Twitter app, it is nice to take a quick step back to remember that it was RIM’s BlackBerry smart phones that introduced to world to instant email access on mobile phones. They also came out with two way pagers before the advent of CDMA and GSM networks. So yes, it is pretty much of a stark revelation to know that this once innovative and pioneering company is now playing a game of catch up with other high end devices.

The question is: do they have to?

As much as we can all appreciate having Twitter on our mobile devices, the target market of the BlackBerry smart phones are the businesses –not exactly the kind of folk who actually need the Twitter app (though after last week’s little incident, some peoples in Vodafone could have used it). No matter how cool the Bold and Curve series are, they just are not cut out for mainstream market of mobile phone users.

So, let’s have that look at the new Twitter app. For now, everything is still a little rough. There are very few shortcuts that can be used, and the application is prone to lagging –taking up to 5 and even 10 seconds to load. It also does not cache content, so you will have to wait for the connection to download everything each time you log in. Hopefully, these issues will be fixed once the commercial version comes out.
