Linux Symbian Combination OS is Coming Straight from Japan

April 30th, 2010 by Simon

concept_docomoOnly the Japanese can think of such a thing. After all, were they not the same society that invented the concept of combining cars to form a giant robot to fight giant alien monsters from outer space? Pop culture references aside, the mobile industry certainly has something to be inspired about in regards to the plans of various Japanese companies in regards to developing a single platform that is compatible with other operating systems.

Did Google and Apple not both laugh and ridicule the concept when it was discussed last year by various western developers and manufacturers? Well, it looks like Japan is one step ahead of the world as they are not just able to make a plan, but they are able to put it into action.

Of course, the development of the new OS is going to take some time. With fierce competition from Google, Apple and Microsoft (as well as other mobile platforms), the new Symbian and Linux OS with reported compatibility with the Android OS will not be arriving on mobile phones until later in 2012. NTT DoCoMo, Fujitsu, NEC, Renesas, Sharp and Panasonic have all been confirmed to be among the companies that have signed up to work on the new mobile platform that is suspected to bring together the best aspects of the Symbian and Linux mobile platforms.

Right now, it is still too early to determine what capabilities the new OS would have, but it is suspected that the device would at least be able to run Flash, HTML5 and have basic multitasking (and most probably cut and paste).

The only real problem is that no matter how good this new OS actually turns out to be, there is still that undeniable possibility that it will be a Japan exclusive release.
