Sony Ericsson is a company that has always been instrumental in the history of personal entertainment on the move, from the innovative Walkman of the 1980s right up until our present time with phones like the W995 that are heavily geared towards audiophiles. The Spiro and Zylo are the two latest additions to the Sony Ericsson Walkman range and come with a dashing array of music features. Along with the standard support for MP3 and AAC playback the Zylo is among the first phones released to come with full support for FLAC lossless files, arguably the format of choice for true music fanatics. FLAC files are generally quite large in size, a lot larger than MP3s anyway, but with microSD cards these two phones can offer you around 16GB of space for your music. Of course you can always swap cards around meaning that there is potentially no limit to the amount of music you can enjoy.
Both phones come with iconic Sony Ericsson features such as TrackID, allowing you to name a song being played in your vicinity by recording a short clip of it, and the Spiro also comes with an FM radio. The Zylo offers you the unique chance to share your music with your contacts by allowing you to play music at the same time as making phone calls. The Zylo and Spiro both allow you to download new music from the PlayNow service and the Zylo comes preloaded with ambient sounds that you can play while making a call to pretend that you are still at work or walking down a busy street.
Both phones operate a sliding form with numeric keypad and are fairly similar in size and weight. The 256k TFT screens in use offer good vibrancy and the Zylo employs an interface that duly pays homage to the good old days of cassette Walkmans. While the emphasis of these two phones is undeniably music, they also offer fantastic features for the social networking generation. Both come with integrated Facebook and Twitter and the Zylo also comes with Picasa and Flickr apps for you to quickly upload photos taken with the camera.
While the Spiro’s camera is fairly run-of-the-mill the Zylo’s comes with some great additional features including geo-tagging, videocalling and a YouTube app that allows you to upload recorded videos with just a couple of clicks. Like most new phones in tune with social networking the Zylo and

Both phones are a great choice for music lovers and also have much to offer in the way of social networking. The cameras are not the best around but that is not the emphasis of these phones (and the Zylo still retains some great features for its camera nonetheless).
