Nokia C3 and C6 Messaging Phones

May 7th, 2010 by Simon

Nokia C3Joining the Nokia C-series family are two new mobile devices announced the same day: the C3 and C6. Like other C-series mobile devices, they are mid-range mobiles with a specific focus on messaging functionality. As the naming would suggest, the C3 is intended to fill the lower-end niche of the messaging device market with a cheaper price and fewer features, while the C6 is the more expensive flagship model with a number of high-range features to match the price.

Nokia C3 backAnnounced on April 13, the Nokia C3 is being marketed as an affordable messaging device, and is the first Series 40-based mobile device to come equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard to help it fill that role.  Available sometime during the second quarter of 2010, the C3 will come in a variety of colours such as golden white, slate grey and hot pink, all in a high-quality, sleek, metallic finish and is expected to cost an affordable £76 before taxes and subsidies.

The C3 comes with the updated Nokia Messaging 3.0 client to allow for easy access to social networks, instant messaging, e-mail and SMS/MMS. Facebook, Twitter, and popular email accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo and Windows Live are all readily available and easily accessible, and Ovi Mail allows for e-mail account creation and management directly from C3 itself. Ovi Chat lets you keep in touch with your friends and family,  making it easier than ever to consolidate all your social interactions in one place. To make things even more convenient, all of your contacts, as well as any upcoming events or breaking news, are available right on the homescreen, making it a great jumping off point for keeping updated and in touch. With a customizable theme and colour settings, you can style the C3 to your liking, and custom widget selection allows you to have a homescreen you can call your own. To help keep track of all this information and make sure you are always on top of things, the C3 can work with MS Outlook to easily sync calendar events, contacts, and notes between your PC and mobile device.

With 55MB of internal memory and support for up to 8GB of external memory via a microSD card, the C3 can store your favourite music as well as any pictures and video you may capture with the 2.0-megapixel camera and 4x digital zoom. Featuring a 2.4” landscape QVGA TFT screen capable of displaying up to 252,000 colours, the C3 has a crisp, clean display making it easy to use and is great for viewing media of any kind. Nokia C6Unveiled in a second announcement later in the very same day as the C3, the C6 offers a slightly higher-range set of features, but is expected to cater to the same messaging-oriented crowd. Based on the 5th edition Series 60 platform, the C6 includes a QWERTY keyboard layout similar to the C3. However, the much-wider flip-out keyboard allows for a bit more room when being used for typing, and then slides out of sight when it isn’t needed. As the flagship device of the C-series with a number of premium features, it is expected to cost quite a bit more than the C3; early estimates place the price at about £185 before taxes and subsidies.

Nokia C6 3Much like its smaller cousin, the C6 features the Nokia Messaging 3.0 client with support for managing and accessing up to 10 separate e-mail accounts from popular e-mail services simultaneously, as well as instant messaging and traditional SMS/MMS support. All of your contacts as well as Facebook updates, upcoming events, new e-mails. and any breaking news you might want are available at a touch from the fully-customisable homescreen. all conveniently located in one spot. With support for custom widgets and layouts, the C6 homescreen can be set up to fit your preferences, with all of your favourite links and applications readily available every time you turn your phone on. The C6 will only be available in two colours—black and white—but its sleek and modern design doesn’t suffer any from the lack of variety.

Nokia C6 2The C6 also sports an impressive 5-megapixel camera and 3.2-inch nHD touch-screen display capable of displaying up to 16.7 million colours, with orientation and proximity detection to allow for greater depth of interaction and automatic UI rotation . Integrated brightness control and ambient light detector helps keep things clear in broad daylight but not blindingly bright during the darker hours. Along with the 5-megapixel camera comes the ability to make video calls, a fun and interesting feature not often found on other phones. Featuring 200MB of internal memory as well as support for up to 16GB of external microSD memory, the C6 also has plenty of room for any video, music, and pictures you might want to store, and the powerful lithium-ion battery provides a stunning 30 hours of music playback or 7 hours of talk time.  3G and Wi-Fi capabilities allow you to keep connected to your favourite websites and social networks to keep your status updated on the go, and Dual Transfer Mode (DTM) lets you receive and send data even while you’re speaking on the phone. Additionally, the C6 features GPS support with lifetime navigation services which provide turn-by-turn instructions and comes with Ovi Maps to help you check weather, plan trips, and find your way around. As expected, the rest of the Ovi suite and access to the Ovi Store available on other Nokia devices are included as well, with the ability to purchase new applications, music, and other additions to create the perfect Nokia experience for your phone.
