No details yet on exactly what Nokia technology patents are being infringed by the iPad touch screen tablet, but it looks like Nokia is about to go for round 2 with Apple.
The two companies already met in legal disputes last year –twice. Nokia sued Apple and Apple sued Nokia, many believe that Apple’s lawsuit against the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer was done more out of principle as opposed to an outright lawsuit.
Anyway, before we get on with the new Nokia legal dispute, let us take a moment and remember that this is the third legal entanglement this year that Apple has found itself involved in. The mobile industry started the year with a pretty big bang as Apple announced that it has filed an infringement lawsuit against Taiwanese manufacturer HTC for the infringement of 20 hardware and software patents across many of HTC’s smart phones (most of which are Android devices).
Apple is also being sued by Elan Microelectronics (also a Taiwanese company) for the use of multi touch technology. For those who can recall, Elan recently won a legal dispute against Synaptics Inc. regarding the use of similar technology.
This latest lawsuit from Nokia covers various technologies such as technology for the transmission of voice and data, positioning data and several other technologies. This lawsuit, and the one from Elan, could potentially force Apple to hold back its stock from being shipped worldwide.
Also, the case has been filed in Wisconsin, where the judicial system has a reputation of being able to deliver quick decision. So far, it is hard to determine if Nokia’s charges against Apple’s iPad technology would stick, but we do expect Apple to already be readying its legal team to fend off the lawsuit and launch a counter lawsuit of their own against the Finnish manufacturer.
