Kindle fans have plenty to be happy about. Since the arrival of the iPad, there has been plenty of newly returned interest in the eBook market. Apple’s decision to support third party eBook applications has allowed Kindle account owners to carry over their digital libraries to the new touch screen tablet.
It comes as to no surprise that the open source Android smart phone has also confirmed that they too will be having a Kindle App available. While there are other eBook apps available, the Kindle app allows users to use their existing Amazon accounts to access their books.
The Kindle app on the Android has one little advantage over the Apple version: the ability to purchase books from Amazon’s eBook store. This is because Apple already has its own digital book store. On the other hand, the Android is running Google Editions. While this service also focuses on the eBooks, the Editions titles are not exactly the competition of the famous digital book format.
One impressive feature that the Kindle app brings is that it actually keeps track of your progress in reading eBooks, in fact, if you are logged in throughout the whole process, you can start reading your eBook on a computer, then pick up your Android smart phone and the book with instantly show you the last page you were reading. This little cross platform compatibility is pretty impressive and it is reminiscent of that demonstration of the Windows Phone 7 which showed a single game being carried over from a phone to a computer to a game console.
The new feature will be compatible with Android 1.6 Donut and later versions of the Android OS. Kindle and Google Editions add up to the growing number of new features that are being added to the Android operating system (which include voice guided sat nav, Goggles and more).
