Technology and the Link with Happiness

Technology

There are links between technology and how content we feel.

This is according to a study carried out by the Chartered Institute for IT (BCS), which surveyed 35,000 people worldwide.

The most valuable thing when it comes to technology like the internet and smartphones, was revealed to be “access to communication tools”, according to BBC News.

In terms of emotional influence, having access to technology was shown to impact women in developing countries, and both men and women with poor earnings or inadequate education.

A researcher of Trajectory Partnership which carried out the research for BCS, Paul Flatters commented on this finding: “Our hypothesis is that women in developing countries benefit more because they are more socially constrained in society. The next phase of our research is to test that.”

And it seems we like technology at every stage of our lives.

Mr Flatters said: “Whether young or old, we’re all social beings, we all have a need for the things IT access facilitates.”

The findings go against some other research into our love of technology, which has deemed this to be negative. Some say we have no definition between work and home life because of the internet and gadgets like the iPhone and the iPad.

In relation to this topic, Mr Flatters said: “A lot of things that are written about IT are negative. But we were puzzled by the fact that people are attached to their IT as well – how do you square that circle?”
