Even if the Motorola DROID was only released in the United States as an exclusive handset under Verizon, the device still managed to make more sales than the Apple iPhone for the first seventy days. Of course, we all know by now that the Apple iPhone eventually outsold all other mobile devices on a one is to one scale, but if all Android devices are to be considered, the Google actually holds a larger share of the mobile phone market than Apple.
The big advantage Apple actually has over Google is not the success of the iPhone itself, but the market demographic that the smart phone was able to gain –the market that actually likes to make online purchases of digital content. A study last year has shown that iPhone owners are more likely to spend money for wallpapers, ringtones, apps and many other downloadable extras.
So the big fight between Android and the iPhone OS now is their ability to play tug of war with this market share. Google has already built up the name and reputation of the Android OS pretty well, now it is up to the features and capabilities of the mobile platform to show the world what it can really do. Of course, it also helps that the Android market place is also expanding to add in more apps and features that will make the OS even more appealing to the users.
Of course, the competition is far from over. Google has only just started with the Android operating system itself and Apple is still about to launch the next iPhone handset. It will be a long time before either one of the two is able to take a significant lead over the other -and with other companies such as Microsoft, RIM and Palm (with HP), there will be much more to watch out for than just these two.
