Blurring the Line: Tablets and Smart Phones

June 8th, 2010 by Liam

apple_ipadWe all know how impressive the Apple iPad is. The touch screen tablet has been able to change the way people access the internet –without the use of a keyboard and mouse, the interface becomes more intuitive, as touch commands make more sense when pressing links and navigating pages.

Of course, the lack of Flash is a major issue, but one that did not stop the iPad from being a successful device. This is why the Android tablet is much awaited by everyone, because it not only brings all the good things people expect from a tablet, but also Flash support as well.

No, it seems that the focus is not just on tablets entirely, but also on smart phones that can deliver the same experience without losing the ability to make and receive calls –another major missing element in the iPad.

Samsung has been the first to cast a big shadow on the iPad’s future with their announcement of a 7 inch tablet device, the Galaxy Tab, which is slated to bring full tablet features but would still have the ability to make and receive calls (the initial images of the device clearly shows the Android OS with a link to the phone menu).

dellstreakDell and Sony Ericsson on the other hand, are offering smart phones with really large touch screens -5 inches. At this size, the Del Streak and a yet to be named Android handset from Sony Ericsson are really pushing the size limits for what one can cram in their pocket.

While Dell’s Streak is already released, the Sony Ericsson 5 inch Android is still in the rumor bin. The initial images are pretty convincing however, the new handset comes with a slide out keyboard and a tilting display which will allow people to use it as a mini netbook.
