We have all seen the Google Nexus One, HTC Desire, Legend, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 and plenty of other Android smart phones and by all means, we are very much impressed. But the availability of the open source platform does not end this year with these handsets alone. In fact, several new smart phones are already on the way.
The closest device that will hit the shelves is Dell’s surprise handset, the Streak. This device may seem like you typical high end Android smart phone with its 5 mega pixel camera and 1GHz Snapdragon CPU. But add in the fact that it also has a large 5 inch capacitive touch screen and it is an instant tablet hybrid device. O2 UK is placing this phone up on shelves this Friday.
If Dell’s reputation and track record is keeping you from making the purchase, then you might want to buy a handset from a more familiar name, Samsung. The Korean developer’s Android offering is no stranger to news and reviews, but with the handset’s ever elusive launch date, it still lingers on the upcoming list. The i9000 Galaxy S brings together a 4 inch super AMOLED capacitive touch screen, an ARM A8 1GHz CPU and of course, Android 2.1 Éclair.
Acer is also coming out with another Android handset. The latest addition to the Liquid series is the Stream. This neat little handset comes with a 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen, a 5 mega pixel camera and a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU (which is basically the same as the Desire and Nexus One). While the specs are nice, it really does not differ much from other Android handsets –though the micro HDMI port is a nice addition.
With plenty more handsets coming out for Google’s mobile platform, it is hard to imagine how Apple will be able to keep up with the competition.
