Following on from the success of their high end Wave S8500, Samsung have announced two new Smartphone’s that will hit the market and be specifically aimed at the Russian and South-Asian markets. In this article we shall be looking at the first of these two new phones from Samsung, the Samsung Wave 2 S5250. Coming only months after the original Samsung Wave hit the market it seems as though Samsung are doing their best to try and expand the market for its new Bada operating system as the Android OS is fast becoming the norm for most Smartphone’s and consumers. Leave your own thoughts on this new Samsung phone on the Samsung Wave 2 S5250 reviews page.
Touch screen phones started to hit the market in limited supply about a decade ago however it has only been in the last few years that technology has advanced far enough for touch screens to become almost the norm for most mobiles these days. If the iPhone was essentially the pioneer of propelling touch screen into the main, then the Samsung Wave is the continuation of a long running trend as the touch screen on the new Samsung Wave 2 S5250 has the response time and fluidity to rival that of the iPhone. The major selling point of the Samsung Wave 2 S5250 is the fact that it runs the Bada OS in which the original Wave phone was the first to carry this OS which looks set to be a credible rival to the numerous amount of Android based phones on the market. However there is a change in the display of the Samsung Wave 2 S5250 compared to the original wave in that this new incarnation has a 3.2-inch WQVGA LCD display as opposed to the previous AMOLED screen; the Samsung Wave 2 S5250 will also have a 240 x 400 resolution. With this size of screen and resolution, it should mean that internet browsing etc… will be clearly displayed but, as we shall see, the Samsung Wave 2 S5250’s internet capabilities may restrict fluid browsing.
It was its ability to subtly but effectively integrate social media into your mobile that made the Samsung Wave so popular and it is pleasing to note that the new Samsung Wave 2 S5250 will also feature this high end social networking connectivity. Samsung’s Social Hub effectively brings all you interaction features together – email, IM, Facebook etc… – under one app and the phone will come ready loaded with both the Facebook and Twitter apps so you can start interacting right away. As with the previous Wave the Samsung Wave 2 S5250 will have Wi-Fi capability; as with the general trend among new phones these days. However it is the phones lack of 3G that is most surprising. If you are somewhere that does not have a wireless connection then browsing the internet or even just keeping up to day with social media will be sluggish and slow without the option of having 3G as backup. For a phone that is so concentrated on providing easy access to social networking and web browsing it is surprising that having a Wi-Fi connection will be the only credible way to access the internet. Although something that is interesting to note is the fact that the Samsung Wave 2 S5250 is rumoured be able to work without a SIM card. So essentially you could use this new Samsung Wave as an internet tablet if you happen to be without your SIM card.
Other features on the Samsung Wave 2 S5250 include the standard camera. At 3.0 mega-pixels and having the option of recording video – although there is no DivX or Xvid playback – it is not ground breaking but the Samsung Wave 2 S5250 is not like the new Motorola Samsung and isn’t designed specifically with the digital camera market in mind and we haven’t even mentioned the fact that it is a significant step down from the 5 megapixel camera that was featured on the original Wave.
The Samsung Wave 2 S5250’s Bada OS means that you will have full access to Samsung apps. While these are not as extensive as iPhone’s, they are still in their infancy and over time should prove to be a plausible alternative to Apple’s gigantic app store. From cooking apps to gasoline mileage calculators they will all be available on the Samsung App store. In terms of memory and the Samsung Wave 2 S5250 can hold up to 16 GB with a microSD card. While this is not the most expansive phone on the market, 16 GB is still pretty hefty and means that the Samsung Wave 2 S5250 could double up as a secondary mp3 players as it also features a 3.5 mm audio jack.
So what should we make of this new phone from Samsung? Well, far from being a significant upgrade it is actually a lesser phone in many ways however it must be noted that the Samsung Wave 2 S5250 was never meant to be a significant improvement from the original Wave. This new incarnation from Samsung is designed to be a cheaper alternative to the original Wave and is designed for the Russian and South-East Asian markets where money is not as freely spent on mobile phones. Also behind the thinking of the Samsung marketing team is the fact that Bada – the new operation system that looks set to become standard on most Samsung mobiles – is still very much the new kid on the block therefore the Samsung Wave 2 S5250 is a cheap way in which to get introduced to this new exciting operating system.
There is no news at the minute on whether the Samsung Wave 2 S5250 will be released in the UK however if Samsung want to drive the market away from Android and onto Bada then offering this inexpensive alternative to the original Wave would be a great way to start and create a Bada revolution at a time when it is Android that is very much leading the way when it comes to mobile operating systems.
