If there is one series from Sony Ericsson that any smart phone fans should be familiar with, it is the XPERIA series of devices.
The first two smart phones under this line were the XPERIA X1 and X2. These two Windows Mobile smart phones combined business functionality with plenty of media access capabilities. The resistive touch screen tends to be bothersome, but since the WinMo OS is reliant on stylus input, users do not have much of a choice. Of course, due to the choice of operating system, the X1 and X2 did not succeed much in the market.
Sony Ericsson brought new life to the XPERIA series of devices when they finally showed the XPERIA X10 Android smart phone at the Mobile World Congress –the device was stunningly great to look at and the Android OS merged perfectly with the Timescape and Mediascape tools. The only drawback to the X10 is that it is running Android 1.6 Donut. Sadly, owners will not get an update to the newly released 2.2 Froyo until later this September. This handset was released just last April.
The X10 also received a couple of spinoff devices, the X10 Mini and the X10 Mini Pro. The X10 Mini has just been announced on several local operators. This handset is basically a mid range version of the XPERIA X10, of course, the new phone loses the better 1GHz processor and the large 4 inch touch screen, but the Mini comes packed with very good mid range hardware. The Mini Pro has the slight advantage of having a slide out QWERTY keyboard.
According to recent reports, a new Android smart phone will be coming from Sony Ericsson and it will be a part of the XPERIA series. So far, the only detail known about the new handset is that it has been codenamed Shakira and that it will be using the standard XPERIA phone form factor.
