The promotion has already been declared several weeks ago and from the looks of it, Microsoft is uncharacteristically on schedule. It looks like the holiday season will be a three way contest between the three biggest smart phone operating systems: the Apple iPhone OS, Google’s Android and the Microsoft Windows Phone 7.
So far, the various updates and announcement regarding WP7 have been promising. The OS is proving to be a sleek looking and as stylish as it first came out and if rumors are to be believed, the overall phone performance of the OS is to be more spectacular. The current version that developers have been given is being described as jerky if not unstable, but considering that this version of the OS is being released several months ahead of the final product, the sloppy controls are forgivable considering how well put together the OS already is.
Many developers are currently complaining about the complexity of the new platform. Some have even reported that Microsoft has been offering cash incentives for developers to make Windows Phone 7 versions of many well known applications. According to some, the amount of time needed to create a WP7 app is much more than the typical OS app. This is probably due to the fact that most functions on the mobile platform can be brought over to the PC or the Xbox 360 –a feature that many developers are not familiar with (and purchasing a console to emulate the app for testing is a pretty steep investment too).
In any case, many end users are already waiting for the new batch of Microsoft bearing handsets. LG, Sony Ericsson, HTC, Samsung and several other phone manufacturers have been confirmed to be ready with devices come this October and the rest of the holiday season.
