I
t seems inevitable for people to compare the two, fresh out of the oven, leading mobile phone platforms. In a battle of flexibility, Google Android 2.2 (Froyo), now running on the Nexus One, emerges as the victor against Apple’s new and improved iOS4, now running on the iPhone 4.
In terms of social networking, the Android 2.2 tops the iOS4 thanks to its myriad of options and, basically, far reaching capabilities. The Android might have lost when compared to the iOS4’s Game Central, if only social networking sites were not restricted to launched apps.
Android works its magic through its integrated social networking menus which helps you share all the photos, videos, links and posts that you want on the fly as soon as you have downloaded your social networking site apps. There are preinstalled Google IM and Talk apps too.
In terms of multitasking, Android 2.2 is your champ. Apple’s iOS4 does offer efficient multitasking, but it has limitations (the app needs to be updated, etc.) that being said, the ‘Droid multitasks just about any app you can download. Any apps that slow down your performance can also be shut down via performance gauging apps like TasKiller.
When it comes to still image and video recording, the Android 2.2 gives the iOS4 a run for its money. Both of them have a 5x digital zoom capability but the little green robot offers so much more customization options like white balance presets and resolution options. And though resizing is present in the iOS4, more editing options (such as rotating and cropping) may be done whenever you want with the ‘Droid.
Lastly, in terms of web browsing capabilities, the iOS4’s no Flash policy and the Android’s ability to display the site in its intended layout makes it an easy win for Google. While the iOS4 does have a lot of unique features, the Android 2.2 has the biggest advantage of all: open source content which opens a world of possibilities.
