HTC Hero: Now with Éclair

July 29th, 2010 by Liam

HTC Hero owners have something to rejoice about, the legendary Android smart phone is finally getting that much needed Android OS update to version 2.1 Éclair.

Of course, it has to be noted that Éclair is not the latest OS version from Google. The 2.2 Froyo update is currently out for the Nexus One smart phone while other handsets are still awaiting their own special update packs. At the very least, this will be bringing up the HTC Hero to the waiting list for Android Froyo.

The update to the HTC Hero must be a tough bite for Sony Ericsson Android smart phone owners. The recently launched X10 series of handsets from the Japanese Swedish mobile phone maker is only using the older Android 1.6 Donut operating system. As impressive as the custom made Timescape user interface may be, the OS is still pretty much behind other mobile devices in the mid to high end smart phone range.

SE devices in this group are the XPERIA X10, X10 Mini and the X10 Mini Pro. Rumors state that the upcoming XPERIA X8 will have the Android Éclair pre-loaded in the system –though most reports say that it will still use the older Donut version.

Back to the HTC Hero, this Android smart phone was once considered the best Android handset of 2009. In fact, if the Motorola Milestone (DROID in the US) had not been released later that year, the Hero would have been the quintessential Android smart phone for last year.

The design and style of the Hero was so well received by people that HTC made another handset as a sequel to the Hero: the HTC Legend. As impressive as the HTC Legend may be, it is pretty much overshadowed (in terms of sheer hardware power) by the more successful HTC Desire.
