In Focus: the New BlackBerry OS

blackberry_logoThe BlackBerry OS 6 is the latest update for RIM’s famous mobile platform and it brings to users plenty of new features and another update to the look of the OS, making it more dynamic and closer to the newer platforms that have been revealed recently.

There is no doubt that the new UI changes have been influenced by the upcoming launch of the Windows Phone 7, and the dominance of the Google Android OS and the Apple iOS. In both cases, being able to isolate the main features that separate the older BlackBerry OS from the new functions seems to have been a key factor in deciding what new features has been added.

First off, social networking has become a major factor in the operating system. The new OS comes with an integrated feed system for social networking accounts, this makes it easier to spot new updates and stay on top of the latest things happening to friends and contacts. The OS even makes it to post on several sites as well. With the OS 6, BlackBerry users can instantly update their Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites with a single tap of the screen.

Speaking of feeds, the RSS feed reader has also been revamped as well. The new user control interface allows BlackBerry owners to easily get the news they need without having to scroll through numerous pages.

Universal search has also been added to the device. This makes finding anything, from names, addresses, phone numbers, media files and other content an easy task. Specific searches can also be saved as an icon that can be re-accessed as needed.

Media playing is now a main feature on the OS. While the feature has been present in previous BlackBerry devices (it is a common smart phone function), this is the first time that the user interface for playing music and other media has been improved.
