Nokia’s N900 Gets the Firefox Browser from Mozilla

July 13th, 2010 by Liam

Nokia-n900-FirefoxThe battle for the best web browser is no longer being fought on the desktop systems –with Firefox, IE and Safari already having made their positions pretty much finite (with other browsers such as Chrome and Opera following suit), the real contest for the best browser available is being fought on the mobile phone arena.

The Nokia N900 is an impressive smart phone with a great OS that just happens to be the only one of its kind, as in a special Maemo OS that was developed for Nokia which was not continued because the team that was making it had to make a new OS. Sure, the upcoming MeeGo operating system is a hybrid of the Moblin and Maemo operating systems that it invariably cut off from further development, but that still leaves the N900 without any support.

Or so we believed. Apparently, Nokia has not forgotten that OS that was originally their replacement for the Symbian OS. While Espoo based Nokia would still continue to use the Symbian OS, it would not be for N-series smart phones (aside from the occasional Symbian^3 and the upcoming Symbian^4 OS –which always has a potential in popping out in the N-series) but for Nokia’s other devices.

The N900 is an impressive handset that combines that top heavy look that we see in the N97 with a more composed color scheme and tone that makes it a device that looks like it was designed to serve a very tech-ish purpose.

The Maemo OS is already an impressive platform. Even before the MeeGo, many developers quickly saw the potential of the OS, particularly in its ability to emulate desktop computer functions such as running low-resource games and console emulators.

According to Mozilla, the official download link for the mobile version of Firefox for the Nokia N900 is already up and running.
