QWERTY Keyboards: Our Top Picks

July 27th, 2010 by Liam

When it comes to smart phones, there are two main types that people choose from, those with QWERTY keyboards, and those without. For those without, the style is pretty straight: a large touch screen display and of course, a spiffy camera.

Keyboard toting handsets have to bring in an added factor: additional bulk. This makes it actually quite challenging for smart phone developers. RIM (and previously, also Palm) has already perfected the front facing keyboard, but for all other devices, the best bet would be to go for a slide out QWERTY keyboard that would give users ample button space.

Here is a quick list of keyboard devices that we recommend.

Motorola’s Android smart phone, the Milestone is one impressive handset; it is sleek, stylish and incredibly functional. Yes, it packs a slide out keyboard. In fact, it is one of the first Android devices to have one. And Motorola has brought in all the elements (lines, shape, textures) to turn the device into a bulky handset into a well made smart phone.

When it comes to size, it is hard to beat the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro. This smart phone comes with an impressively fast CPU, and also a nice 2.6 inch TFT capacitive touch screen and the Android 1.6 Donut OS. The device also takes some visual influences from the XPERIA X10, lending it a touch of that cool elegance that Sony devices are often known for.

Of course, no list of keyboard handsets would be complete without a BlackBerry smart phone. And for this list, we recommend none other than the BlackBerry Bold 9700. The keyboard is responsive, provides excellent feedback and seems to have been made in just the right size for everyone. Learning to use this handset only takes a very shot while –a big plus for any smart phone.
