Taking a quick time off from looking at what’s coming and having a good long review at what has come is a great way of seeing and understanding how far mobile phone technology has come in the past few years. This year, the European Imaging and Sound Association has recognized and awarded some rather impressive accolades to devices that have helped changed and mold the coming technology of the future.
Not surprisingly, the big European Smartphone award has been given to the Samsung GT i9000 Galaxy S Android handset. The high end smart phone comes packed with Samsung’s super AMOLED technology and a 1GHz processor that could easily take on any app and feature without any performance problems. The device looks a lot like the Apple iPhone, but with a working antenna and a much better operating system.
The big twist came with the overall European Mobile Phone Award which went straight to Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X10 Mini smart phone. Granted that the handset does not have the full power specs that can be found on the original XPERIA X10 (and that this version lacks the physical, slide out, QWERTY keyboard on the X10 Mini), it is still a very impressive smart phone that manages to bring in the simplicity of a mid range handset with all the software features of a high end device.
The one thing that might be an issue for most consumers (but is apparently not a consideration in the awards) is the price tag on the device –which makes it one of the more expensive mid range devices.
Another surprise winner is LG with the GD510 Pop; which won the green award. While the device is not as eco friendly as the Greenheart devices from Sony Ericsson, it was certainly a pioneer in the sense that it still had very impressive features such as a 3 inch TFT resistive touch screen display at a time when most eco phones used a candy bar form factor.
