The Nokia X5-01 handset has made an appearance on Nokia’s Ovi Store, fuelling rumours of an imminent release.
Similar in its squareness to the Motorola Flipout smartphone, the X5-01 sports a 2.36 inch screen. Unlike the Flipout, the screen is not touch-sensitive but the phone does come with a QWERTY keyboard, albeit a slide-down one rather than a flip-out one.
This is what Nokia had to say on its blog back in June: The Nokia X5 plugs part of the gap between the Nokia X3 and Nokia X6, but as you can see from the pictures, is a pretty unique device in its own right. You might be reminded of a MiniDisc player in its visual stylings and the musical connection is definitely correct when it comes to this device’s specialisms. The Nokia X5 features excellent sound quality, dedicated music keys and loud speakers, and will include access to Ovi Music, and to Comes with Music in some regions.
The Nokia X5-01 measures 74.2 x 66.4 x 16.8 mm and weighs 129g, so it is still pocket-friendly despite its unusual square design. In terms of features, the phone comes with social networking integration and support for both Wi-Fi and 3G, so you can stay in touch with friends easily. Apps are pre-installed for Twitter and getting online is reliable thanks to the connectivity options.
For music, there is an MP3 player and FM radio on the X5-01. There are also some friendly touches such as spinning the handset to change a track and shaking it to reveal any unread messages, to brighten the experience. And speaking of bright things, the Nokia device comes in a range of colours including pink, azure, yellow, green and purple, as well as graphite black.

Nokia X5-01 deals aren’t the only ones coming soon – the Nokia X5 is also featured on the Ovi Store, although it looks unlikely this handset will be released in the UK.
