OK, so they’re not going to turn you into Barry White but they may well let you write music like him; albeit slightly tinny and, in some cases, severely limited music but a string of notes thrown together often with a rhythmical accompaniment to boot can be created. Of course, with the iPhone being the big telephony related brother to the iPod it’s also quite effective when you do want to listen to music or even play infuriating rhythm games so if music is your thing we’ve put together a list of 6 of the best iPhone apps for you.
1 – Shazam
LG owners will, in the future, be faced with Shazam right out of the box as the music recognition app is to be included on all LG smartphone handsets. You can also download the free or nearly free versions of the app to your iPhone and other handsets. Simply play a short sample of a song into your phone and the Shazam app will identify it, displaying the track, artist, and album details. You’ll even get a link to buy and download a copy of the track and may receive details about the artist’s upcoming tours.
2 – Spotify
Spotify is far from being a cheap app but considering what you receive, the £9.99 per month subscription plan is really very reasonable (at least in our opinion anyway). Spotify lets you access millions of tracks by just about every artist in every conceivable genre as well as a few that we didn’t know really existed.
3 – Bloom
Bloom does a lot of music related stuff. Just by touching the screen you can create your own unique soundtrack to life. Alternatively, you can just let it go wild by creating its own music that you can sit and listen to. More ocarina than synthesizer but fun nevertheless.
4 – Our Stage
Our Stage is a free app, which instantly knocks I up a few notches in popularity, and is perfect for those that prefer to discover new music than listen to their existing playlist. Choose a genre and you’ll be presented with a list of the most recent tracks in that genre. As well as some stuff from major labels there’s also independent and unsigned artists in there too and a great Battle of the Bands monthly feature.
5 – Band
OK, so you want to create your own music on your iPhone? Well, who wouldn’t? (Both were rhetorical questions, by the way) The Band app offers a number of instruments that you can play on your phone including a grand piano and even a 12 bar blues instrument. It’s unlikely you’ll be able to pen a number 1 but it is incredible fun and will help you whittle away numerous hours when you’ve nothing else to do.
6 – Beat It
Beat It is a cool rhythm game app that has been doing the rounds for over a year now but it continues to be best in class despite some up and coming titles that may well take the mantle away. Tap notes and beats to match the tune that was just played and be rewarded with more complex tracks, improved instrument line-ups, and a colourful array of background imagery. You can even share clips of your handy work with your friends.
