Samsung has been working hard to crank out a new CPU after the previously successful Hummingbird. From the looks of it, they have been successful. Enter the new Samsung Orion. This new chip is based on the ARM Cortex A9 CPU and provides excellent speed at 1GHz, great graphics acceleration and of course support for HD video playback as well.
The only real concern now is what devices this new core processor is set to come out on. It has already been confirmed that the previously released Hummingbird is a success. With the overall performance of the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab and Wave smart phones showing that the processor is able to handle most of the demands of today’s handsets, the Orion is set to handle the needs of tomorrow’s phones.
Speculation has pointed towards the Orion first appearing on Samsung’s next Galaxy devices (possibly the Galaxy S 2).
Another Korean phone maker is also working hard to adapt a new processor. The NVIDIA based Tegra is getting the dual core treatment and is set to be adapted by LG into its newer devices. While no specific upcoming device has been confirmed to be using the Tegra, it is likely that the LG phones which are set to be released before the end of this year might make use of the new CPU technology.
The dual core Tegra is reported to have support for 1080p HD video as well as better battery power management. This means that it is not only stronger, but is able to last longer as well.
Battery limitations have been one major factor that has limited the potential of many smart phones due to the fact that processors could not run as fast as their desktop counterparts. This is because the energy consumption would easily a drain a 1500mAh battery of its charge pretty fast.
