Sony Ericsson Delays Android 2.1 For Xperia X10 Offers Until Late October

September 24th, 2010 by Caroline

We hope Xperia X10 owners are patient beings as Sony Ericsson has just announced the Android 2.1 upgrade, expected to begin at the end of this month, has been delayed until the end of October.

In a blog post, Sony Ericsson’s Rikard Skogberg said: “The plan for the added features and Android 2.1 step-up still holds but unfortunately we need a couple of more weeks before we are ready to start the roll-out. The revised plan is to start the roll-out from end of October and onwards.”

He added: “We are of course not happy about the change of launch timing but we have had to spend some additional time on the software to really makes sure we roll-out with the right quality and user experience.”

Sony Ericsson has confirmed that when the OS upgrade begins, all three Xperia X10 mobile phones will get the 2.1 version of the Google Android platform.

For those with Xperia X10 deals, the Android 2.1 OS will bring changes, the key ones being HD video recording with continuous autofocus; 5 home screens for storing all your apps and shortcuts; and a social phonebook which syncs your contact photos from Facebook automatically and highlights when your friends are online. There is also a new back-up and restore app to help keep your data safe.

The upgrade will also bring the new back-up and restore app to the Xperia X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro handsets, together with enhanced Bluetooth file transfer, automatic syncing of your contact photos between Facebook and your phone book, and improved ways of dealing with images, text and audio in messages.

Many Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 owners have called for the OS upgrade to be for the new Android 2.2 instead of 2.1, in light of the delay – and we can understand why given the age of the 2.1 platform and the fact many smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S and HTC Desire either already run on the latest Android OS or are about to get it. Does this delay affect you?
