Bada’s Real Second Wave – The Samsung S8530 Wave II

October 4th, 2010 by Best Mobile Contracts

Samsung have just announced their follow up to the successful Samsung S8500 Wave handset – the Samsung S8530 Wave II. You’d be forgiven for thinking the Samsung Wave already had a follow up device in the very similarly named Samsung S5250 Wave 2. However, that handset was more of a mid-range handset, unlike the true follow up, the S8530 Wave II, which aims its sights at the same high range smartphone market that the original Wave tackled with such success.

So what’s the Wave II got to offer? Well, like the original Wave, the Wave II is operated by Samsung’s proprietary Bada OS. This operating system has been praised for its ease of use and intuitiveness, while the ever growing Samsung application store offers users a wide range of apps to work and play with. Early reports are indicating that the software of the Wave II will be upgraded to include new features such as Trace, which seems to be a one-touch typing feature for Bada, similar to Swype.

In terms of hardware, the Wave II features similar specs to the original Wave, but with the notable inclusion of an upgraded, enlarged 3.7 inch touch screen. It’s interesting to note that the original’s 3.3 inch touch screen was a super-AMOLED screen, whereas Samsung have decided to equip the Wave II with a Super Clear LCD screen. We’ll have to wait and see how the two screen types measure up in terms of quality, but in principle a bigger screen is always nice to see.

Beyond the screen, the specifications released so far seem to more or less match up to the original. The Wave II comes with a 1GHz processor, 2GB of memory (upgradeable with microSD cards), and a 5 megapixel camera. The original Wave’s impressive range of connectivity options has also been preserved, including Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi and HSDPA.

The Wave II is currently expected to be available in the UK sometime in November. We’ll likely see a few more details emerge before then, though, so we’ll keep you up to date with all the developments in this interesting handset.
