Stephen Elop has officially announced that the Nokia N9 smart phone will be arriving in the UK by 2011.
While the news does disappointingly delay the much awaited MeeGo handset, fans of the Nokia N-series will not have to wait too long. The expected launch for the device is early in the first quarter of the year so that means that the phone will still be out soon enough.
Much of the hype and excitement for the new N-series handset stems from the fact that the new phone will be sporting an even newer operating system: the MeeGo mobile platform. This new OS has been developed by Nokia’s Maemo team and Intel’s Moblin developers. Bring bringing together the two open source systems, Nokia and Intel are hoping to provide the smart phone industry with an all new OS.
This is pretty much Nokia’s big ticket in fending off the Android, iOS and Windows Phone 7. Aside from having an impressive new mobile platform (or so Nokia says), the N9 will be packing the typical N-series form factor with its side flip-out QWERTY keyboard.
In the meanwhile, Nokia’s N8 will have to satisfy the crowds. The Symbian^3 toting handset is packing serious hardware power with its 12 mega pixel camera and HD features. However, the phone’s limited processing power certainly discourages the development of some resource heavy apps (like the ones that appear on the iPhone or on Android devices).
Aside from the Nokia N8, there is also another Symbian^3 smart phone from the Finnish phone maker, the Nokia C7. This handset is reported to be sporting Nokia’s newly acquired NFC technology (near field communications technology) for use with mobile payment systems.
With that, plenty is certainly riding on Nokia being successful with launching the N9 in Dublin next year at a yet to be detailed event.
