The official announcement is out and from the looks of it, iPhone, iPad and iPod owners will have to wait for while before the official iOS 4.2 update finally rolls out. This sad little advisory has just come out fresh from the news vine and straight to the disappointed ears of the public.

More specifically, sad news for all users still using the third generation Apple devices; the 4.2 update for the platform does add a few useful features, but its main focus is in improving the performance of the older devices.

For Google, the launch of the Froyo version of the Android OS is very significant. First, the update will allow for Flash 10.1 player support –a feature that Apple would never have (at least, for as long as Steve Jobs is still leading the Cupertino based company). The other most important thing about Android 2.2 Froyo is how fast the handset becomes once the update kicks in.

Google is boasting of an impressive three to five times faster in terms of user interface and web browsing experience –thanks to better kernel memory management and java support, that speed has been attained in the new version of the OS.

Apple’s new 4.2 OS update offers the same exact thing. While no specific details on how the speed is attained, the fact is that this update will prove to be very crucial –especially with all the criticisms that Apple has been having lately.

In any case, the delay until November 24 is certainly drawing a negative feedback from the market, as rumors that an issue with the WiFi settings has forced Apple to take an extra week of preparation prior to launch. Some are also quite eager to try out the new AirPlay feature, which allows different Apple devices to cross access and play media.
