The Symbian Foundation, under Finnish phone maker Nokia, has confirmed that the Symbian operating system is going to undergo a major change. The Foundation itself will be turning into a licensing organization –handling the publication and distribution of many software titles, and Nokia seems like it will be busy handling the upcoming launch of the MeeGo operating system.
With the SYMBOESE project coming soon it is easy to see why the Symbian team is not keen on developing platforms anymore. Also, it has been confirmed that the source code of the Symbian OS will also no longer be available.
Orange, T-Mobile and 3 UK are all going to be offering the Apple iPad touch screen tablet at reduced tariff prices. No confirmations yet on what the lowest costs are going to be, but from the looks of it, plenty of focus will be given on getting users some high value monthly data allowances. With new Android tablets launching left and right, it is about time that Apple tries to defend its position in the tablet industry.
As part of the preparations for the upcoming Olympics, and partially under the new Digital Economy Bill, it seems that there are now active projects that have the goal of bringing mobile network coverage to the Tube transportation network. While the lack of mobile connectivity has been a long brought up concern, it was only until recently that actual plans have been brought up. According to reports, Thales and Huawei are currently under negotiations for the project.
A couple of new devices are adding up to this weeks’ lineup of smart phones. Just recently, Nokia has confirmed that the C7-00 and the X7-00 smart phones are coming out pretty soon. Sadly, there is no word about the MeeGo OS powered Nokia N9 as of yet.
