Mobile Platform News: Android, MeeGo and iOS

November 16th, 2010 by Best Mobile Contracts

The Apple iOS 4.2 update is a much anticipated system performance upgrade for all third generation Apple gadgets. However, problems with the system’s WiFi settings have delayed the progress on the update and as of the moment, the upgrade release date has been stalled. The good news is that the fine folks at Cupertino are already working hard to bring a solution to Apple’s users. However, we will all have to still wait around for the OS to get finished.

The MeeGo OS team has just gotten a little fancier than ever before. As if the Finnish phone maker Nokia and electronics manufacturer Intel has not been impressive enough, the highly acclaimed Linux developer AMD is now teaming up with the two companies to co-develop the MeeGo operating system. Expect to see some rather impressive changes and updates to the already exciting mobile platform when it finally comes out on the upcoming Nokia N9 smart phone.

The addition of AMD to the team makes the platform certainly high profile. The only question now is whiter the hardware on the N9 would be sufficient enough to compete with the next generation phones that will be released along with the handset when it finally comes out next year.

Lastly on our round up of platform news, the Android OS; it seems that Google’s mobile platform is taking in a deluge of updates left and right. Of course, with all the handsets using the open source platform, fragmentation is a pretty common issue and many users are still stuck with the much older Android 1.5 Cupcake or 1.6 Donut platforms.

Even Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA series is stuck with the older 1.6 OS. While the Android 2.1 Éclair updates for the devices are already confirmed, they are yet to be released and users will still have to wait for an update to 2.2 Froyo. In the meanwhile, the 2.3 Gingerbread update is just waiting around the corner to be released before the end of the year.
