The tablet industry is getting a major blitz of Android devices as a large percent of the latest tablet offerings all make use of the Google made open source mobile platform. Despite the fact that Google has specifically stated several weeks back that the Android OS was never meant to be used in tablet devices –they have the Google Chrome OS intended for that purpose, it is hard to deny the strong marketing appeal of the little green robot.
Acer has announced that it has a couple of new tablets on the way: 7 inch and 10.1 inch touch screen tablets are coming from the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer. The specific details on the new hardware are not fully disclosed, but from what we have gathered, the devices will sport HD video playback support and will even have cameras. According to some rumors, the Acer tablets will also be running on dual core processors –which make this a likely contender against the Galaxy Tab from Samsung.
Also from Acer, a new mini-tablet smart phone is coming our way. The device comes close to the Dell Streak’s 5 inch touch screen display. The unnamed Acer handset will have a 4.8 inch screen –which is a big leap over the 4.3 inch screen used by other mobile devices that focus on video playback.
In other Android related news, Motorola has confirmed that the Defy smart phone will be getting an update to Android 2.2 Froyo. For those not familiar, this is one special handset. The Defy gets its name by literally defying the known limits of otherwise fragile touch screen smart phones. Protected by Gorilla glass against shocks and dust proofing that meets the requirements for an IP7 rating, this is one handset that will certainly satisfy those with very active lifestyles.
