5 Awesome iPad Apps

December 14th, 2010 by Thomas

Without doubt, the best iPad applications are those that are built specifically for Apple’s market-leading tablet and take full advantage of that gorgeous 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS display.

To prove my point and put my money where my big fat mouth is, here are 5 of my favourite HD apps.

Little Things

One of the most popular iPad games and it’s immediately evident why.

The premise is simple; find a list of objects hidden within a picture. Sound easy? It’s not.

But as you’re scanning each beautifully rendered image and frustratingly jabbing away at the screen, you can’t help but appreciate the uncomplicated beauty of Little Things.

The best part of all is it’s suitable for all ages and can be enjoyed by grandparents and children alike. It really is fun for all the family.

The Guardian EyeWitness

Pictures look stunning on the iPad – fact.

Even those regrettable drunken snaps you took with friends in a dingy nightclub toilet come out looking beautiful (well, better at least).

With that in mind, just imagine how spectacular an iPad application crammed with stunning photography would be?

Actually, you don’t have to imagine thanks to the Guardian EyeWitness app, which adds just one new image a day to give you a spectacular snapshot of what’s going on in the world.

It’s free to download so if you have an iPad, go and get it right now.

IMDB

If you love films, you’ll fall head over heels for the IMDB (International Movie Database) application.

You can access every piece of information you could ever possibly want about any film ever made. There’s also news, reviews and all kinds of special features.

But what makes the IMDB app that little bit more special on iPad is that you can watch HD trailers and clips from upcoming movies, which truly takes full advantage of the widescreen display and shows you exactly why Apple call this device ‘magical’.

iFitness HD

If just the idea of exercise makes you feel slightly nauseas, it’s unlikely you’ll ever bother with the iFitness app.

But whether you’re a gym-regular or don’t even own a pair trainers, you can’t help but be impressed by this nifty little application.

Not only does it provide a wealth of workout routines and expert tips for exercising specific areas of the body, but it also contains hundreds of videos showing you exactly how each exercise should be performed.

You can also log details of every workout you do and keep a record of your progress.

Like I said right at the start, this won’t interest everyone but it’s certainly a shining example of everything an application should be.

GearedHD

I started with a game, so I think I’ll finish with one too.

GearedHD is easy to pick up, beautifully designed and incredibly addictive, a combination which makes it perfect for iPad.

You’re given a number of gears to position and your task is to arrange them so that a spinning mechanism begins to, well…spin.

It’s easy at first but quickly becomes more complicated.

There’s nothing fussy about this game and it just looks rather-pretty on the 9.7 inch screen. That’s why I’m recommending it.
