Android Gingerbread Confirmed for Nexus One Deals “in Coming Weeks”

December 21st, 2010 by Caroline

Revealed via Twitter, it is now official that the Google Nexus One smartphone will get the Android 2.3 OS upgrade.

The Nexus One Twitter stream reads: “The Gingerbread OTA for Nexus One will happen in the coming weeks. Just hang tight!”

So good news for owners of the HTC-manufactured Nexus One handset because, although no actual date has been revealed for the upgrade yet, you now know Gingerbread is coming to this phone. And bringing with it enhancements like NFC (Near Field Communication) support, better battery life, and a redesigned app manager.

In the company’s press release announcing the newest Nexus device, Google had this to say about Gingerbread: “It delivers a number of improvements, including user interface refinements, NFC support, a new keyboard and text selection tool, Internet (VoIP/SIP) calling, improved copy/paste functionality and gyroscope sensor support, which is especially useful for games. For developers, the Gingerbread SDK/NDK is now available, and in the coming weeks Gingerbread will be open sourced.”

The successor to the Nexus One has just launched, with the Nexus S sold through the Carphone Warehouse in the UK. And the company has just reduced the price of this smartphone to £429 SIM-free or free on contract for £30 onwards a month.

The Nexus One was the first handset to run on the Android 2.1 OS and its successor is the first to taste Gingerbread. The Nexus One has a 3.7 inch AMOLED display and high-end features including a 5-megapixel camera and 1GHz processor. Similar but with a number of enhancements, the Nexus S sports a 4 inch Super AMOLED screen with a Contour Display and 5-megapixel snapper.

Nexus One deals are available on Vodafone and start at £25 a month.
