LG Doubles Sales of Optimus One Deals and Confirms Gingerbread Upgrade

December 13th, 2010 by Caroline

It’s been an excellent start to the week for Optimus One fans after LG confirmed the smartphone will receive the Gingerbread upgrade after all – and also announced news of surpassing the 2 million sales mark.

The popular LG Optimus One currently runs on the Android 2.2 OS, and since Google unveiled the Nexus S which will run on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform there has been some confusion over which mobile phones will get the upgrade. Last week, LG mistakenly announced via Facebook that Optimus One deals wouldn’t get the upgrade, only to swiftly apologise for this.

And yesterday, the company confirmed that Gingerbread would happen, stating on its website: LG will upgrade all Optimus One smartphones currently using the Froyo OS to the next version of the Android OS, Gingerbread. Details of the upgrade schedule will be announced locally in due course. We sincerely apologize for the confusion and misunderstanding that was caused regarding this issue.

The affordable Android has sold well since its launch a few months ago, reaching the 1 million unit sales mark in mid-November. Now LG has advised sales figures have doubled to more than 2 million.

LG said in a statement: “The Optimus One reached 1 million sales in about 40 days from its launch in mid-November. And in about 20 days, another 1 million phones were delivered.”

The company now hopes to go on to sell 10 million of these handsets worldwide.

You can buy the Optimus One in the UK on various networks, starting from £15 a month on contract and £149 on PAYG. For the money, this LG gives you the Froyo OS which is upgradable to the Gingerbread OS, a 3.2 inch capacitive screen, Wi-Fi, up to 32GB of memory via a microSD card, and a good battery. The phone’s battery supports up to 700 hours on standby or up to 8 hours talk time, ensuring you can enjoy the different features for longer in between charges.
