Five days can seem like a long time when you want to get your hands on the latest Android smartphone – which may explain how the Nexus S was displayed as “in stock” early on Carphone Warehouse’s website.
The Samsung-built Google-based Nexus S is the first Android to feature Gingerbread OS and is scheduled for UK release on 20 December. The US gets Nexus S deals a whole 4 days earlier than us, from tomorrow onwards.
However, despite the early display by the Carphone Warehouse, the site now states “pre-order now for delivery in time for Christmas”. The good news at least is this phone is available on Monday of next week – is it on your Christmas wish list?
In the UK, the Nexus S will be available through the Carphone Warehouse, unlike the Nexus One which was only sold through Google. You can buy the Nexus S SIM-free for £549 or for £35 a month on contract.
The Carphone Warehouse describes this smartphone as “the most powerful Android powered phone”, adding “it’s the first device to run Android 2.3: also known as Gingerbread, and the only phone with a curved 4-inch Super AMOLED display.”
With Gingerbread onboard, the Nexus S benefits from an updated UI, an enhanced keyboard and app management, and comes with NFC (Near Field Communication) support. In terms of features, there is a 5-megapixel camera with flash onboard as well as ample music and media functions. Sadly though, the 16GB internal memory is non-expandable as there is no microSD slot – a decision also taken by Microsoft on its WP7 handsets like the LG Optimus 7.
Did you manage to get hold of the Nexus S early? We’d love to hear from you if you did. And if you’re planning to buy this phone next week, share your opinions of it with us in our Nexus S reviews section.
