Nokia Suing Apple: For the Fourth Time

December 20th, 2010 by Best Mobile Contracts

Mobile news is never really complete without a quick dose of legal drama, and Nokia has come to oblige us all. Once again, Nokia is preparing for another round of legal toss up with Apple, though many doubt that after so many cases, a single one of these patent infringement lawsuits will actually be good for anyone.

The new lawsuit covers a total of up to 24 different registered patents and the case is being filed in a variety of territories including locally in the UK, Germany and in the Netherlands. A major of the patents focus heavily on the use of touch screen technology and also for the implementation of apps for users –while nothing gravely serious, these are basic components of the iOS experience, pointing to the fact that Nokia wants a piece of the action that Apple is gaining.

The timing could not be better either. At this point, Nokia is on the down low. Many predict that Google will finally surpass the Symbian platform this year, even more believe that Nokia will not be able to catch up anymore. With delays hitting hard on the Finnish phone maker’s releases, it is not surprising that the public interest in the Symbian OS and the Nokia brand name has been constantly decreasing –a successful lawsuit against Apple would help keep the massive phone maker afloat.

Of course, the matter of actually winning the case against Apple is a different story altogether. This is not the first time that Nokia and Apple have chosen to tango, with lawsuits and counter-lawsuits flying at each other. Considering that this is Nokia’s fourth attempt, one would think that they would know better than to take on Apple’s legal capabilities. The Cupertino based company has more than enough money and time to drag out the procedure to make the whole process harder for Nokia.
