Samsung posted record profits for the fourth quarter of 2010 and not only that but the company was able to move over 2 million devices within that same period. While the sales of its tablet division might seem not up to par to that of Apple which was able to move 4.19 million tablets during the same time period, it should be pointed out that according to Samsung, sales of the Galaxy Tab nearly doubled during the last month of the year.
This is without much carrier subsidization which proves that consumers are hungry for tablets and if the last quarter of 2010 was any indication of what to expect from the 2011 year, tablets will become the dominant electronic only trailing that of smartphones. More than likely, many customers who would have opted for a netbook in 2010 will jump on the iPad, Galaxy Tab, Xoom, PlayBook or webOS bandwagon.
That said, Samsung is said to be working on the second generation of the Tab which will feature updated specs. According to leaks and other such information, there will be Android 3.0 running the device, a software version that is specifically built for tablets, as well as a brighter screen, one that Samsung calls the “Super AMOLED Plus.” Most naturally this will be in response to Apple’s forthcoming iPad 2 which will feature an updated screen as well as video and picture taking capabilities.
More importantly, there will be an updated processor; most naturally something that is rocking dual core action as well as more RAM and most naturally carrier specific devices. There is also speculation that Samsung could be working on a 4G version for Sprint in the U.S and WiFi only versions for everyone else.
