Windows Phone 7 Marketplace Reaches 6,000 Apps

January 13th, 2011 by Caroline

It’s been a week of Windows Phone 7-related news – some good, some bad – and now Microsoft has cause for celebration as its Marketplace has hit the 6,000 apps mark.

There are now more than 6,000 apps to choose between in the WP7 Marketplace. The volume seems to increase in batches of 1,000 once a fortnight, as at the end of December there were just 5,000 apps. At this pace, it’s estimated there’ll be 10,000 apps by the middle of March.

At the moment, there are 116 apps added daily on average. In terms of price, the average app cost is said to be £1.50 with 71% of apps being paid-for apps. Games account for 23% of purchases and is the most popular category, followed by Tools at 14% and Entertainment at 11%. Have you a favourite WP7 app?

Of course, the WP7 app store only began in October 2010 so it’s competing fairly well against its rivals. For example, BlackBerry has 16,000 apps in its store currently.

In other app news, Microsoft is busily trying to prevent Apple from trade marking the term “app store”. The argument runs that the term is a generic one and therefore cannot be trade marked. We’ll keep you posted on any developments regarding this matter.

And returning to all-things WP7, we’ve been hearing this week about the HTC 7 Pro being on O2 Germany next week, bringing with it a 3.6 inch display, Snapdragon processor and 5-megapixel snapper. Although sadly the Dell Venue Pro’s launch is delayed until February, so you’ll have to wait a little longer to enjoy this high-end slider smartphone.

Are you a Windows Phone 7 fan? Or are you sticking with your alternative, preferred OS?
