10 Best iPhone Photo Editing Apps

February 4th, 2011 by Richard

iPhone Photo Editing

Messing about with photos to add on funny details or making polished and professional amendments to your pictures are both valid options with the latest iPhone photo editing applications. Here are some of the best ones around no matter what type of editing you want to do.
Oldbooth Premium

This is the tool to let you make your snaps look as though they were taken in an old style photo booth. If you want to see how your friends would have looked had they been hippies or 1930s Hollywood stars then is a good place to do it. A close up shot of the face and shoulder area is the best way to be able to add on the best wig, beards, glasses and retro clothing. A fun app which you could spend quite a few hours on for less than a pound at current prices. You can also try out the free version first if you prefer.

Animoto

This app isn’t so much about editing your photos as putting them together in a great little slideshow with background music. It is easy to use and you can email the completed work to your contacts.

Comic Touch. This is another light hearted photo editing app. You can add speech bubbles, distort people almost out of all recognition using crazy mirror effects and do all sort of other silly things. At a couple of pounds it might be especially useful for keeping younger members of the family entertained, and the interface is easy enough to use.

Lego Photo

If you have ever wondered what the world would be like if it were made of Lego (and I think we all have at some point) then this app will help you work out the answer. You can basically load in your photos and then switch to Lego block mode. It doesn’t work with every photo but a lot look really good as colourful bricks. It is free, so there is no real reason not to give it a try.

Picoli

This is a rather more sensible photo editing app than some others on the list, and if you are keen to make good, clean adjustments to your photos without any funny stuff then this would be three pounds well spent for a clean interface and wide range of functions. It is a Photoshop type app, so if you are used to using that software then you should have no problem switching over to Picoli to do your iPhone editing.

CameraBag

For a little over a pound you get the chance to apply a lot of different retro effects to your photos. It is a bit more of a serious editing tool than some of the fun ones mentioned on the list but apps like this always make me want to add the retro look to a really old photo, to see what it does then. A nice chance to step back in time and see your pictures in a different light without going for the overly comic effect which many retro apps indulge in.

Pano

The smart thing about this app is that it lets you put together various different photos of the same place to make a big, sweeping panoramic shot out of them. Like a lot of others on this list it only costs about 2 quid and if you are going somewhere spectacular on holiday it is a good way of getting great shots without buying a really expensive cameras and professional lenses.

Photo fx

This is a good choice if you want to improve your photos but don’t know how to do it. The controls are really simple and the previews are very useful for letting you pick the right type of effect. It costs under £2 and is easy to get started on.

Photogene

For £1.79 you get a pretty comprehensive photo editing tool for your iPhone which does pretty much everything you would expect it do. It is easy to use and offers lots of ways of making your snaps even better.

Tiltshift

This piece of software is a bit different from some of the other ones in that it may have a more practical use rather than simply being a bit of harmless fun. The idea is that you can focus in on one specific area of a picture and make it stand out while blurring the rest of it, making it look like you are viewing a miniature scene rather than a real photo. The technique usually needs a hugely expensive professional lens to make it work but with this app at a little over £1 you can now have some fun trying it out on the cheap.
